About
Hello, I'm Kazutaro. I'm based in Shinsaibashi (Amerikamura), Osaka. I primarily accept design work that will ultimately be reflected in irezumi. This includes paintings, three-dimensional sculptures, vehicle exteriors, and collaborations with artists from other fields. Thanks to many connections, I enjoyed my 20s enough for a lifetime, so I plan to spend the rest of my life focused on irezumi, running through it calmly until the end.
Concept
Centering on black, I use density, scar-like lines, and a low center of gravity. I incorporate slightly rough lines and unevenness as part of a single expression. My motifs often include Japanese traditional (wabori), horror, and dark expressions, but I also frequently create works using only flow and abstract expressions without specific motifs. Rather than wanting to scare people with negative expressions, it's closer to the feeling of visualizing the darkness and weight within people. I believe one of the criteria for being a professional irezumi artist lies in the skill of creating beautiful gradations. Furthermore, I believe that the impression towards the beauty of gradation is equal for both professionals and clients. Even with noisy tattoos or seemingly chaotic works, I try to incorporate some aspect of professional technique. Beyond what feels good at first glance, I value a slight catch or an artificially created sense of discomfort. For Japanese traditional (wabori) themes, I challenge myself with fresh compositions and details, then finish them with a dark aesthetic.
History
I trained for approximately 10 years under Ten at TEN TATTOO STUDIO (Osaka). I became independent from the studio and established OLDHOUSE, which will be in its fourth year on January 1, 2026. Initially, I focused on psychedelic and sensory expressions, but later, while studying under my mentor, I learned Japanese traditional (wabori) and Ukiyo-e, which broadened my range of expression. Abstract expressions, dark, and horror elements have also been influenced by manga, movies, and literature. Now, with 13 years of experience as a tattoo artist, I feel these elements are gradually blending together. While it's far from what could be called Japanese traditional (wabori), I feel it's slowly taking shape as a dark Japanese style. Based on experience, I feel I'm becoming more logical year by year, but as I'm not afraid of change, I want to pursue what moves my heart, without overlooking any sense of discomfort or curiosity.
