Revive the tradition of Sinuye (English below) Sinuye — the traditional tattoos once worn by Ainu women on their hands, forearms, and around the lips. Derived from si (self) and nuye (to carve), this practice traditionally involves opening the skin with obsidian or iron blades and rubbing in pigment. While rarely seen in Japan today, a revival is steadily growing among Ainu descendants worldwide. This session was for repunseta and her mother (hapo), whom I’ve been in touch with since before I even began my Sinuye revival work. They visited me during their journey traveling south through Japan. The Design: • Knuckles: Orca fins (Repun-kur symbol). • Wrist to Forearm: A hand-poked flow inspired by the Pon-ayoro River, where their ancestors once lived. (Back of hand/wrist by the client’s uncle via machine). For the mother’s piece, I rearranged the motifs while keeping the core elements identical, so their bond as mother and daughter is instantly recognizable. Per her request, we combined hand-poking with traditional incisions for the diamond (♦︎) sections. Seeing the mother moved to tears by her daughter’s completed Sinuye reminded me why this revival work matters so much. It is a true honor to help reclaim these traditions. Thank you both for such a beautiful time. iyairaikere🫶
